Way #1: Home Pick-Up
The first thing you are going to want to do is to contact your local waste management company and see if they offer pick-up for residential hazardous waste material. Many waste management companies offer residential hazardous waste pick-up for an additional fee.
You will have to call them, pay the fee, and arrange for a special pick-up. Oftentimes, you will be required to use special containers and prepare the materials in a special way for this type of pick-up. You are not just going to put the items in the trash, you will need to arrange and pay for a special pick-up.
Way #2: Use a Drop-Off Location
Some waste management companies may not offer home pick-up, but they may offer drop-off service to help you deal with your hazardous materials. Many drop-off locations only accept certain materials.
You are going to want to call and find out how you need to prepare the material, and what the drop-off rules are. You don't want to carry lots of hazardous waste around in your vehicle, so make sure you know where and when to drop it off, so you can minimize the amount of time you have these hazardous materials in your possession.
Way #3: Mail-In Recycling
Finally, for some type of hazardous waste, you may be able to mail in the material to get it recycled. With a mail-in program, you may have to put the hazardous items into a special container, and then you will need to mail-in that special container to a specific recycling facility.
These special services are only available in certain areas and for special hazardous materials, such as used batteries. Most liquid hazardous waste materials cannot be recycled in this manner.
If you have hazardous waste around your home, you need to contact your local waste management company and see if you can get a home pick-up or if you can drop-off the material to be properly disposed of and recycled. For some hazardous waste, you may be able to sue a mail-in recycling program. It is worth it to figure out how to properly dispose of these materials.
